In Bildserien, Comics und Graphic Novells sind Bildsprache und Schriftbild kaum voneinander zu trennen und es entstehen vielfältige Formen des grafischen Erzählens. Der forschende Blick auf historische Ereignisse, politische und soziale Themen wird autobiografisch, dokumentarisch oder fiktional vom Zeichenstil gefasst und dramaturgisch zu einer Geschichte verdichtet. Die Frage nach den unterschiedlichen künstlerischen Arbeitsmethoden und Stilmitteln zum Erzählen in Bildserien sind direkt mit Fragestellungen zur historischen Augenzeugenschaft und zur performativen Eigenwirksamkeit der Bildserien verknüpft.

Symposium | Part 1
At the symposium Futures of Comics, Fumetto presents innovative protagonists of the international comic scene. They share their visions and highlight details from their work spheres and their approaches. They delve deeply into issues, they don’t shy away from change, and they are already shaping the future of the “ninth art.” Questions of preserving and sharing information and issues surrounding comics as research objects are more important today than ever – and potential solutions are as diverse as comic art itself.

Censorship
Censorship is an attempt to silence somebody’s voice – images are painted over or destroyed, comics are removed from shelves or banned outright. Artists are fired or they and their publishers are sued. The line between what is or isn’t censorship is often intentionally blurred. In part 2 of the symposium, comic artists from Switzerland, Greece, Colombia, Turkey, and England talk about their very different experiences with attempts to intimidate or silence them. In their contributions, they ask whether different types of censorship are comparable and discuss the best strategies in dealing with censorship.
